Kiss FM originated in October 1985 as a pirate radio station broadcasting to London on 94 FM. It was hugely popular as a pirate channel, with around 500,000 listeners. Creator Gordon Mac teamed up with a club promoter to create the successful Kiss nights at the Wag Club which included the first ever Acid House party. Kiss went legitimate in 1990, but remained in the ownership of the DJs themselves who including Tim Westwood, Jonathan More and Norman Jay and others.
The road to legitimacy wasn’t a smooth one. The owners fought hard to get their license, being pipped to the post in 1988 by Jazz FM (now Smooth Radio). However, a petition to the Home Secretary saw new licenses becoming available, and Kiss was became a bona fide radio station.
It was launched as a legal station on September 1st 1990 at studios on the Holloway Road. Emap took over control and provided financial support, moving the Kiss headquarters Central London.
Among the DJs that made Kiss great are Trevor Nelson, Judge Jules, Dave Pearce, Sarah HB, Steve Jackson, Norman Jay, Craig Charles, DJ Richie Rich UK, Coldcut, Jazzie B, Gilles Peterson and Pete Wardman.
