The station broadcasts on FM in London from studios on Oxford Street, as well as being simulcast digitally, online and on digital TV. The Magic brand in UK radio started with Magic 828, the sister station of Leeds station Radio Aire. Emap bought the Metro Radio group in 1995 and so took over the Magic name. Magic 105.4 FM is an independent local radio station based in London with an adult contemporary focus. It started life as Melody 105.4 FM and was rebranded to Magic after the purchase by Emap. The station is similar in output to BBC Radio 2, but it differs from its competitor by following the motto 'more music, less talk'. Magic consistently beats other rivals in listener ratings both for audience reach and audience share, proving its success and popularity. When Melody became Magic, controllers brought in non-stop music hours on weekday afternoons using automated (or DJ-less) format. It experimented with sharing content with the eight Magic stations in the north of England but this was stopped after audience figures dropped. Magic was given an overhaul in 2003 with live broadcasting replacing automated output in the evenings, and independent news reading. Magic features celebrity-hosted shows at weekends, and runs competitions with large prizes. One listener won £168,600 in a six-month-long Mystery Voices contest – one of the biggest money prizes ever given away by a UK radio station. Past presenters include Lorraine Kelly who hosted the Tender Moments show, and Ben Shephard with his Saturday Night Magic. Currently Neil Fox has the breakfast slot, Paul Phear hosts afternoons, and Eamonn Holmes hosts Sunday Stressbusters. |
