New look show. The team explore the 23rd annual Malvern Spring Gardening Show, held at the Three Counties Show Ground in Worcestershire. This year the Malvern Spring Gardening Show is bigger and better than ever with 17 stunning Show Gardens and more plant nurseries in the Floral Marquee than Chelsea. Joe looks for advice and ideas for his allotment, whilst Carol is plant hunting in the Floral Marquee
The latest show of Joe Swift telling how to develope an allotment was the most disgraceful production I have ever seen. To give novice gardeners the idea that an allotment can be made in a short time is no way to encourage new people who will soon be dissilusioned. There were a number of false ideas not least the scrapeing of the surface. What was called marestail is in fact horsetail. rotovating weed roots can only make the situation worse, the use of municiple compost is of doubtful value as it is likely to contain many undesirable elements including heavy metals, conifer shreddings which are usually very acid and if roadsweepings are included all sorts of undesirable elements. Using chippings for paths without a membane below is also bad practice.
