Film of the Day – The Crazies

Radha Mitchell and Danielle Panabaker in The Crazies (2010)

Breck Eisner directs this taut reworking of the 1970s cult horror/conspiracy classic The Crazies about a mystery virus that sweeps through a small midwestern town turning its once neighbourly community into deranged killer zombies.

As the death toll rises and panic sets in it becomes clear that the townsfolk have been exposed to a botched chemical experiment and the government is eager to keep it secret at all costs. Martial law is imposed in a brutal military crackdown and the town quarantined to prevent a spread of the virus

Sheriff Dutton (Timothy Olyphant) leads a motley bunch of survivors (Joe Anderson, Radha Mitchell and Danielle Panabaker) as they try to avoid mindless killer zombies and mindless killer soldiers to reach safety beyond the town.

It’s bloody, it’s gruesome and at times it’s pretty damn scary. The Crazies is far from a classic but it ticks all the right boxes for a Friday Night horror on the couch.

The Crazies Friday 10.00pm on Viceland.
