After a year long wait for Sherlock fans, the brilliant detective and his budding wing man returned to our screens on New Year’s Day and what an action packed, if a little muddled, return it was.
With a rather shocking and tear jerking end to episode one, the next chapter for Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr Watson (Martin Freeman) is set to be a dark one. Titled ‘The Lying Detective’ a new bad guy is introduced to the scene and this guy is about as bad as they get. Calverton Smith (Toby Jones), an acknowledged businessman with a snarly smile is publicly adored for his generous contributions to charity but underneath his do-good façade he is evil – a man whose dark secrets give even Sherlock nightmares.
Alone once again in 221B, Sherlock’s obsession with Smith combined with his own grief and remorse overcomes even him, and with a fatally failed promise to John, it looks as if there is no light at the end of the tunnel for either of them.
