Chadwick Boseman becomes Thurgood Marshall – the African-American lawyer at the forefront of the civil rights movement in the 1960s and later the first black person to become a justice of Supreme Court – in Reginald Hudlin’s biographical legal-drama, Marshall. The film, as moving as it is inspiring, also features performances from Josh Gad, Kate Hudson and Dan Stevens and tells the story of one of Marshall’s first and most iconic cases: The State of Connecticut v. Joseph Spell.
Accused of the rape and attempted murder of a white woman in Connecticut, Joseph Spell meets NAACP lawyer Thurgood Marshall who, with the help of a local insurance lawyer named Sam Friedman, agrees to take the case and defend Spell. With a legal and social system which dehumanised and despises African American citizens, Thurgood and Sam are posed with an almost impossible challenge but one which would inspire a nation to change should they beat it.
However, when Marshall and Freidman discover a lie in their Spell’s alibi, they find their whole case thrown into disarray and the odds stacked even higher against them Will the pair be able accomplish the impossible, bringing the truth to the light and proving their clients’ innocence.
Marshall – Thursday 8:00pm on Sky Cinema (Drama).
