10 Action Stars Who Should Be In The Expendables 2

The Expendables promised much but didn’t deliver. Part of its problem was the cast, which was touted as a “Best of Action Heroes” supermovie but in reality only had Stallone and Dolph Lundgren as real draws.

The second movie is about to start shooting and with the announcement that Chuck Norris and Jean Claude Van Damme will definitely make appearances, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger will be given more “substantial” roles and Michael Biehn is on the wish list, is it too much to hope that this one might be the movie we were hoping for?

But wait, there’s still a load of actors that could only improve this movie!

Who? Well, let’s have a look.

1. Wesley Snipes

Snipes is awesome. He’s got muscles on his muscles, he’s cut a bloody swathe through hordes of vampires and he’s mastered the art of wearing sunglasses in the dark. But it’s the fight against Stallone in Demolition Man (plus, you know, awesome hair) that takes the cake.

Weird bit of trivia – Snipes was conisdered for the role of Geordie La Forge in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Oh what a difference that would have made.

Where are they now?
Um, well sadly, Snipes is currently in prison for tax evasion so unless Stallone and the gang decide to spring him, he’s not going to be in any movies until at least 2014.

2. Steven Seagal

Seagal, ah Seagal. The slick-haired, ponytailed hardman was the star of a whole boatload of early 90s action movies where he essentially played the same character – a humourless one-man army who hit first and asked questions later.

Check out this scene from Out For Justice where he thwacks the crap out of some dudes with a cue ball wrapped in a tea-towel. Oh and there’s a great cameo by Bruce Lee’s highest-ranked student Dan Inosanto as Sticks. Bonus.

Where are they now?
Since everyone got fed up of Seagal’s schtick, he’s mainly been releasing films straight to DVD while moonlighting as a Reserve Deputy Chief in Louisiana for his TV series Lawman. He had an appearance in 2010’s Machete as the bad guy. Oh yeah, and he’s evidently been working on a steady diet of pies and donuts so he probably wouldn’t be able to kick as much ass as usual.

3. Kurt Russell

No one on this list is as cool as Kurt Russell. Specifically, we’d like to see him as Jack Burton from Big Trouble In Little China or quintessential badass Snake Plisskin from Escape From New York and not say Dean Proffitt from Overboard.

This movie needs more eyepatches!

Where are they now?
He had a role as the murderous Stuntman Mike in Tarantino’s Death Proof in 2007. Since then, he’s not been up to much. Sadly, Kurt Russell turned down the opportunity to be in the first movie and it doesn’t look like he’ll reconsider for this one. Shame.

4. Linda Hamilton

I know that The Expendables is supposed to be the quinessential blokes’ movie but there’s plenty of women that kick ass out there and Linda Hamilton would be awesome.

She bulked up massively for her iconic role of Sarah Connor in Terminator 2 – her first scene is her doing chin ups off the side of her bunk in an insane asylum.

Where are they now?
She’s not had much big screen action lately – her last film was the goddawful comedy Holy Water. But with Terminator co-star Michael Biehn being sought for The Expendables, she’d slot in nicely.

5. Jenette Goldstein

She may not be an instantly recognisable name but she’ll be familiar to fans of Aliens where she played double-hard marine Vasquez, a sort of prototype for Michelle Rodriguez’s entire career. Be honest, you wouldn’t mess with her would you?

She also has a brief role as John Connor’s ascerbic mum in Terminator 2.

Where are they now?
Nothing much on the radar. She appeared in the small horror film Autopsy in 2008 with Terminator 2 co-star Robert Patrick.

6. Carl Weathers

Action Jackson, Apollo Creed, the dude who gets his arms blown off in Predator – Carl Weathers has been in some awesome action movies (often with perculiarly shiny muscles).

He’s also had the honour of starring with both Arnie (Predator) and Stallone (Rocky) so The Expendables 2 would be a neat little bridge. Plus: awesome mustache.

Where are they now?
He’s currently doing quite a lot of TV work appearing in Brothers and ER. We need him back on the big screen.

7. Ronny Cox

This film needs a decent bad guy and who better for an 80s throwback that Ronny Cox?

He played Dick Jones in Robocop as well as Cohaagen in Total Recall – two superb action movies. He’s not a muscle-bound powerhouse like the other actors here but the outfit’s got to have some brains and no one plays the face of evil self-interested business like Cox.

Where are they now?
Again, he hasn’t been up to much lately. He was in an short-lived TV series called Tell Me You Love Me in 2007 and Imagine That with Eddie Murphy in 2009 that should ideally be forgotten.

8. Bill Duke

Bill is one scary dude. Does this guy ever blink? He’s had some memorable appearances alongside Arnold Schwazenegger in Predator as Mac (“I’m gonna have me some fun”) and in Commando as a hired killer (“Are you scared? Well you should be because this green beret’s gonna kick your big ass”).

He’d make the perfect cameo role in The Expendables 2.

Where are they now?
He’s still fairly active as both an actor, appearing in Henry’s Crime alongside Keanu Reeves in 2010, and director – he’s behind the camera on scores of small TV and film projects. Fun fact: he directed Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit. Probably not his finest hour.

9. Gary Busey

Another scary mofo, Gary Busey is absolutely bat-shit crazy; he’s got a stare like he’s looking into a different dimension. Gary Busey’s racked up loads of significant roles in film like Under Siege, Predator 2 and Point Break but it’s the role of unhinged psychopath Mr Joshua in Lethal Weapon which makes him a great choice for The Expendables. He’d probably not make it as a lead role, but he’d make a brilliant supporting bad guy.

Sadly embedding’s been disabled for the famous fight scene on the grass, but check it out anyway.

In the mean time, enjoy this suitable deranged shot of Busey we found.

Where are they now?
Busey’s had a lot of trouble with the law for drug possession and domestic abuse but still remains quite active with five films scheduled for release this year. He’s also been on a lot of American reality TV, appearing on Celebrity Rehab With Doctor Drew and Celebrity Apprentice 4.

10. Al Leong

Not a household name but he’s had some great little moments in action films. He’s the terrorist that steals a twinky in Die Hard, Genghis Khan in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and the guy that tortures Mel Gibson with electricity in Lethal Weapon.

He also appeared in Big Trouble In Little China, Rapid Fire, Last Action Hero and The Scorpion King. And let’s not forget, he’s got a sweet Fu Manchu moustache.

Where are they now?
He hasn’t been in a movie since 2005 but surely his martial arts prowess and abilities as a stunt man would come in useful for The Expendables 2?
