Jez and Jamie are joined this week by Mike Edwards from Movie Vortex and Obsessed With Film. We saddle up our horses for the Coen brothers’ take on True Grit, don our beige cardigans for the melancholy Never Let Me Go, feel a little alien with Pegg and Frost’s Paul, travel to Hawaii with Adam Sandler and wish we hadn’t in Just Go With It, think gnomes are about as funny as they sound in Gnomeo & Juliet and decide that Yogi isn’t smarter than the average bear after all.
00.15 – Mr Men: The Movie. Werner Herzog’s Mr Men? Gaspar Noe’s Mr Men? Oh, the new found horrors of childhood.
04.25 – Meryl Streep will play Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady directed by Phyllida “Mamma Mia!” Lloyd. Unfortunately, it’s not a musical.
08.32 – A new version of Great Expectations directed by Mike Newell, the man with the most eclectic CV in Hollywood.
12.24 – The Wicker Tree. The director of the orginal Wicker Man (the 1973 version, not the 2006 Nicolas Cage abomination) returns with…uh…what appears to be the same movie. Parodies of the 2006 version are infinitely better.
15,56 – Submarine. Richard Ayoade from The IT Crowd (however you pronounce it) has his directorial debut with this off-kilter comedy. Looks good.
18.43 – Cave Of Forgotten Dreams. Werner Herzog shows us around 30,000 year old caves, Jamie almost has an excitement-induced heart-attack. What would it be like if Michael Bay directed it?
20.58 – Superbowl Spot roundup. Testosterone and explosion overload. We all like the look of Captain America and Super 8, admit reluctantly that Transformers 3 actually looks quite good and really don’t care about Pirates Of The Carribean 4.
29.06 – True Grit – The Coen brothers turn their considerable powers to the 1969 classic. Jeff Bridges makes it his own even though he speaks through a mouth full of cake.
40.36 – Never Let Me Go – Very difficult to talk about without spoilers so skip this bit if you’re at all worried. Bleak, melancholy coming of age love story featuring good performances from Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield.
49.57 – Paul – Pegg and Frost’s latest outing with a wise-cracking alien. Business as usual but not quite up to their usual standard. Not ap-paul-ing (sorry).
55.53 – Just Go With It – “Comedy” starring Adam Sandler and Nicole Kidman. Cynical and crucially lacking in laughs. No.
1.03.29 – Gnomeo And Juliet – A large ensemble cast complete with Elton John funding and scoring make this pottery-based version of Romeo & Juliet just about all right.
1.07.24 – Yogi Bear. Looks awful and is awful. Shocker. Everyone check out Garfield Minus Garfield, it’s better than this.
