Ben Craig’s three minute Modern Times is this year’s first great sci-fi short. Set in the near future, Modern Times showcases what everyday life might be like. Eschewing explosions and space battles, Modern Times is a quietly meditative but no less impressive film which has had Hollywood execs scrambling to get in touch with its creator.
37 year old Ben Craig works in print advertising in Edinburgh. He never went to film school and has no previous experience with special effects software which shows just how much you can get done by sheer will and determination.
Craig said that he watched people during commercial shoots at work and learned as he went along. Once he conceived the idea for Modern Times he teamed up with Director of Photography Richard Moutney and used his equipment. The live action section was filmed over a weekend with Craig then spending two months in post production learning software editing as he went along.
Since the video was posted in mid-December, Craig’s be inundated with calls from studios including Warner Bros., Fox and Paramount, so it looks like he’s got a bright future ahead of him.
“It comes to a point that you just have to do it,” Craig said of his decision to try his hand at a new career path. “I said to myself, ‘I want to do this and I’m going to start it now,’ that’s kind of what happened.”
