Maybe it was the lack of adverts, maybe it was Adrian Chiles inane banter or maybe it was the commentary from the CBBC team, but six times more footy fans watched last night’s Euro 2012 final on BBC than watched on rival channel ITV.
Spain battered Italy 4-0 to retain their Euro crown in Kiev but while the Beeb’s coverage fronted by Gary Linekar averaged 13.2 million viewers, ITV1’s attracted an average of just 2.2 million.
BBC usually enjoy a marked advantage over their competitors when it comes to simultaneous coverage and ITV didn’t bother going up against them in the Euro final of 2008.
Yet last night’s margin was even bigger than usual and an increase on the Euro 2004 Final, during which the Beeb attracted four times more viewers.
