Following Brett Ratner’s uncermonious departure as Oscar producer earlier this week which saw him replaced by Brian Grazer, Eddie Murphy has also left as host, leaving speculation wide open to wagging tongue of rumour. All bets are off now because verteran preenter Billy Crystal is officially the host of the 84th Academy Awards.
Announcing it on Twitter Crystal said, “Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions. Looking forward to the show.”
While Crystal is an old hand and a reliable host, it’s a shame that it’s finally scuppered hopes that The Muppets might get the job. Come on, Statler and Waldorf commenting on the proceedings would have been magnificent! But I suppose you can’t blame the Academy for playing it safe after taking a risk on Ratner, perhaps now they can stop gently rocking and weeping in the corner.
