Hollywood mainstay Brian Grazer is poised to step in for the recently dismissed Brett Ratner to produce the 84th annual Academy Awards.
Grazer has worked extensively in tinsel town and his CV includes Cowboys & Aliens, Robin Hood and Frost/Nixon among many other films and TV shows. He even has an Oscar of his own and it makes you wonder, why didn’t they just get this guy in the first place?
Academy president Tom Sherak told the Hollywood Reporter “Brian Grazer is a renowned filmmaker who over the past 25 years has produced a diverse and extraordinary body of work.”
Eddie Murphy has stepped down as host following Ratner’s departure with Neil Patrick Harris rumoured as a replacement. Given his two highly regarded stints as the Tony Awards host, he’d probably be the perfect host.
The thing is, he doesn’t seem to want to do it.
Speaking to HitFix earlier this year, Harris said: “I am actively anti-campaigning. I don’t think it’s the big job everyone thinks it is. It’s one night when people win awards. It’s a years worth of people over thinking that night Whether it’s Oscar campaigns or specific campaigns for and then you have publicist and studios and everyone has such a vested interest in that one night that it’s a pressure cooker.
It’s a big deal, but to come out as the host? Unless you are doing Billy Crystal it’s really difficult. And I think if you are doing Billy Crystal I think you get hit for being Billy Crystal, so I think you’re a big target regardless what you do. I mean, look at what happened with Anne and James. They just got slammed for it. Both of them.”
Still, we can but hope though right?
