Channel 4 has picked up exclusive rights to the next series of the hit American cartoon Rick and Morty, plus the rights to other Adult Swim shows.
It will be the first time that the show, which began in 2013, will be available on free-to-air UK television, having only been broadcast on Comedy Central UK. As well as airing the fourth season, which is due to air sometime later this year, the first three seasons will also be broadcast on E4, starting in February.
The series revolves around the adventures of drunken nihilistic mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his kind-but-panicky grandson Morty Smith, as they embark on adventures across the universe and multiverse, resulting in chaos, violence and destruction along the way, to the general annoyance of the rest of their family. Past storylines have included travelling in an amusement park built inside a tramp, creating a song for an intergalactic realty TV show in order to save the world from giant alien heads, and Rick turning himself into a pickle – in what is generally believed to be one of the most violent TV episodes ever made.
As well as gaining the rights to Ricky and Morty, Channel 4 have gained the rights to over 300 Adult Swim episodes, with more to be made available over the next three years, to be released on All4. Shows confirmed to appear so far include Robot Chicken, The Venture Bros, The Eric Andre Show, Mostly 4 Millennials, Mr. Pickles, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Squidbillies, Hot Streets, Ballmastrz 9009, Tim & Eric’s Bedtime Stories and Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!
