Johnny Depp is in the process of reliving his childhood by playing characters from series he used to love. Next up will be The Night Stalker (not to be confused with the serial killer biopic gestating with James Franco in the lead),which now has a director in the shape of Edgar Wright (Shaun Of The Dead, Scott Pilgrim).
Depp will play Carl Kolchak (originally played by Darren McGavin), a reporter who specialises in investigating mysterious crimes that often have a supernatural element to them.
The orginal series only ran for one season and was preceeded by two TV movies but it’s often cited as a prominent influence on The X-Files (McGavin even appeared in a few episodes).
There’s no writer yet, so this is firmly at an ideas stage at the moment. But with Wright overseeing the project from the beginning, that bodes quite well for a good artistic direction.
In the mean time Depp will be next seen as vampire Barnabas Collins in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, a movie adaptation of the spooky gothic sopa opera which ran in the late-1960s/early 1970s and will hit our screens in May.
