Lionsgate are probably breathing a huge sigh of relief as they’ve found a director for The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire in the shape of I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence.
With Gary Ross’s decision not to direct the sequel, the net was cast far a wide to find a suitable characters. The choices were quickly narrowed to Lawrence and Moneyball director Bennett Miller. But with word earlier this week that Miller will be working on real-life wrestling drama Foxcatcher with Steve Carell, Mark Ruffallo and Channing Tatum, he won’t have the time to take the helm.
Lawrence will probably be fine for Catching Fire – besides I Am Legend, he also directed Robert Pattinson romance Water For Elephants, so he can handle sappy romance as well as action spectacle, although the choice doesn’t exactly fill us with excitement.
Lionsgate can stop panicking now though. The sequel is scheduled for a November 2013 release but needs to be finished by this December for Jennifer Lawrence to film the X-Men: First Class sequel.
Simon Beaufoy has already written the first draft of the script with word that Ross would have some input given that he co-wrote the first film. Whether Lawrence will keep it as it is remains to be seen.
