Gael Garcia Bernal Is Zorro Reborn

This sounds like another joke when you first hear it. Gael Garcia Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries) will be the next actor to buckle his swash as Zorro in a post-apocalyptic reimagining of the sword-wielding masked vigilante.

Despite its Western themes it won’t be set in California or Mexico although “post-apocalyptic” gives a lot of wiggle room for locations.

There’s still no word on a villain or a plot but the script is being worked on by Glenn Gers from an original draft by Harker writers Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy.  The project still lacks a director depsite early rumours that it would visual effect supremo Rpin Suwannath (the X-Men series, Van Helsing).

It’s been a while since we saw Zorro on screen.  Antonio Banderas memorably brought the character to life in The Mask Of Zorro in 1998 and followed that up with a somewhat weaker sequel The Legend Of Zorro in 2005.  Looks like Sony still believes there’s life in the character yet though, as they’re also gearing up for an origin story based on Isabel Allende’s novel, simply titled Zorro.

Gael Garcia Bernal meanwhile will be next seen in Spanish language comedy Casa De Mi Padre alongside Will Ferrel and with Kate Hudson in A Little Bit Of Heaven.
