After a strong start, Ricky Gervaisâ latest comedy Lifeâs Too Short ended up as a ratings disappointment. However it has now been revealed that he is set to jump ship over to Channel 4 with a new project.
The comedian has been signed up to write and star in Derek, a new sitcom based in an old peopleâs home. Gervais is to play the title role of Derek Noakes, an elderly man whose befuddled ways are played up for comic effect.
A pilot has already been filmed, and it has reportedly impressed bosses who are now keen to go ahead and commission an entire series. Karl Pilkington is also set to star alongside his old friend.
This is good news for Gervais after his recent effort failed to live up to expectations. His past hits such as The Office or Extras were a hit with viewers and critics alike, yet Lifeâs Too Short was unsuccessful in its bid to set the ratings alight. A source from BBC2 said: âThere have been many meetings in a bid to discover why it missed the mark. No one really knows. Some you win, some you lose.â?
