‘Gobsmacked’ Phil Vickery Wins Celebrity Masterchef Title

While his former colleagues were busy making fools of themselves at the World Cup, former England rugby captain Phil Vickery won the Celebrity Masterchef 2011 title after serving up a three course storm in the final against Kirsty Wark and Nick Pickard.

“I’m absolutely gobsmacked, I can’t believe it,” he said this morning. “I never ever thought for one second I’d have it in me to be champion – who says miracles can’t happen?”

Vickery served up an unusual starter of scallops with black pudding, pea shoots, crispy parma ham and apple puree – but it certainly made an impression on the judges.

“Phil has got something very, very special,” said judge John Torrode. “He wants to feed people to make them happy and that is what a true cook is all about.”

For his main he dished up lamb fillet with baby carrots, asparagus wrapped in mint and more parma ham with fondant potatoes and for a sweet dessert he whipped up some orange and chocolate bread and butter pudding with clotted cream.

Greg Wallace explained that Vickery had ‘serious talent’. “He’s a great big bloke with a heart to match and he fell in love with food during this competition,” he said.

The series attracted some criticism in early weeks after the Beeb decided to pull the show from evening schedules and air it at as part of the daytime schedule. However viewing figures on the iPlayer remained healthy.

So what did you make of this year’s series? Was Phil a worthy winner? ..And did you enjoy watching it on your laptop?
