Warners’ new version of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., has been struggling to gain any traction. Steven Soderbergh was down to direct but backed out a couple of weeks ago, leaving the studio to scramble for a replacement. Well, they’ve found one and his name is Guy Ritchie.
Ritchie, who made Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrells and then made a succession of increasingly awful clones had a surprise hit with Sherlock Holmes which was actually rather good. He’s following that up with the sequel Game Of Shadows (which we’re seeing on Monday), due out around Christmas.
At the moment, the spy movie has Contagion writer Scott Z Burns on board but very little else. It’s not only directors that they’ve had trouble keeping interested. George Clooney was offered the lead role but declined, then Bradley Cooper was attached and backed out. The latest candidate is Channing Tatum but there’s been no more news since he was offered it in mid-November.
