Now that really is a turn up for the books. 13 years after Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger starred in the modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Taming Of The Shrew in 10 Things I Hate About You and original director Gil Junger has decided that it’s about time for a sequel titled 10 Things I Hate About Life. What’s more Captain America‘s Hayley Atwell is in line to star.
Quite how exactly this will be a sequel is a little beyond us, but apparently Junger’s script will move the situation into the present day (although presumably with a different cast of characters). Stranger still, he told Variety that he conceived the idea after he read a story about a man who had committed suicide at a scenic overlook. Comedy gold clearly.
“It is the story of two relatable, ordinary people with normal jobs and normal desires whose seemingly great lives have become unmanageable,” he said, “Two people who go to the same place at the same time to end it. Their chance meeting is so awkward, so raw, and so funny, they postpone their intentions and go their separate ways.”
While we don’t blame Junger for wanting to revisit the biggest success of his career so far (he tried once before in a short-lived TV series), this smacks of gigantic cash in on the “10 Things” title. Why couldn’t have just written an original movie with an original title?
Atwell’s presence at least gives it some semblance of credibility, but this sounds like a cynical ploy to us.
