Mortal Kombat fans are in for a bit of a treat as Jeri Ryan has been confirmed to return in the forthcoming new webisodes (for all you non-geeks, that’s Seven Of Nine from Star Trek: Voyager) as Sonya Blade.
For those of you who don’t remember, Mortal Kombat was an ultra violent (often hilariously so) game which provided tabloid newspapers with much fodder for outrage in the early 90s. The gaming series is still limping on despite it not being very good (its high point was arguably Mortal Kombat II in 1993) and has been the subject of two awful films (in 1995 and 1997 respectively) and two television series (an animation in 1996 and live action in 1998).
But last year an online short which dramatically reimagined the franchise and ditched the supernatural Outworld, grounding it instead in the gritty, rain-slicked streets of Deacon City, proved extremely popular (and starred the ever-wonderful Michael Jai White as Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs).
The new series will expand on that first 10 minutes which introduced Sonya Blade as Jax’s partner and will feature series villain Kano and back stories for fan favourites such as Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sub-Zero and Scorpion.
The new series is penned as before by Kevin Tancharoen who said, “It’s extremely gratifying to have such talented actors playing these iconic roles. They will bring the essence of Mortal Kombat to life.”
The series is shooting in Vancouver and should be online in the spring. FINISH HIM!
