Well he was going to sign up eventually wasn’t he? But we can finally bring some confirmed news that JJ Abrams is finally discussing the planned sequel to the surprisingly decent Trek sequel released in 2009.
Deadline reports that because of scheduling commitments (and Abrams has been running around like a blue-arsed fly producing all kinds of TV shows and movies, not to mention that little film called Super 8), they’ve pushed back the release to late 2012 at the earliest. The slot that Paramount reserved for it in June 2012 will instead fall to G.I. Joe: Retaliation. I’m sure everyone’s going to be pleased by that.
Paramount have also exercised their right to renew the cast’s contracts so Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Zoe Saldana will all be ready whenever Abrams is.
Abrams is currently looking at scripts with writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lidelof, so expect him to make a decision soonish.
