Reports which have suggested that Dame Maggie Smith will be leaving Downton Abbey raised our heart rates unnecessarily, according to the show’s producers.
The team behind the hit period drama has flatly denied that the Dame will be leaving the show.
According to reports, the Dowager Countess had asked Julian Fellowes to write her gracefully out of the show during the course of the third series – allowing her time to focus on insulting real people (and working on her movie and stage career).
The LA Times now reports that a representative from show producer Carnival Films, is denying the actress’s departure.
The spokesperson says: “Series three is currently filming with Maggie along with the other cast. We do not comment on future storylines. However, there is no truth in the story that Maggie is leaving the show.”
And it had all fit so well. Earlier in the season, Kate Beaton had leaked that there would be a major character death in the third series of the show…and Smith was ripe for the killin’.
Downton Abbey will return to screens later this year on ITV1 in the UK and on PBS in the US.
