Matt Lucas For Therese Raquin

Matt Lucas is the latest star to be added to the line-up for Charlie Stratton’s big screen adaptation of Therese Raquin.

He will join Tom Felton, Jessica Lange, Oscar Isaac and Elizabeth Olsen are already confirmed for roles and Lucas will join the crew as policeman Olivier.

Based on Emile Zola’s 1867 novel, the film will tell the story of orphan Therese as she endures miserable bequeathal to Camille (Felton). Desperately unhappy, Therese conducts an affair with the gorgeous Laurent (Isaac) but ends up embroiled in even more sinful behaviour than she bargained for.

In the preface to the novel, Zola explains that his goal in writing the novel was to “study temperaments and not characters” and its detached approach makes it a fine example of so-called “naturalism”. Whether this scientific approach to novel-writing and character creation will come across in the Hollywood interpretation is yet to be seen.

This is Lucas’ third high-profile Hollywood appearance with Bridesmaids and Alice In Wonderland apparently having identified his silver screen potential.

Charlie Stratton has already brought Therese Raquin to life once before in the shape of a stage production by Neal Bell, which he brought to the LA stage in the later 1990s. Evidently this is where his love affair with the tortured Therese took hold. TR will represent Stratton’s first outing as sole megaphone wielder, with previous directorial efforts largely restricted to television. Shooting starts next month.
