Red or Black Gives Away £2m But Loses Over A Million Viewers

Simon Cowell’s latest TV monster launched on Saturday night and dominated the evening’s television schedule with a little bit of help from X Factor, but ratings for the show were down by over a million viewers last night as the show gave away it’s second £1,000,000 jackpot in two nights.

Saturday night’s debut attracted 6.6 million viewers and a 30.8% share in the 7pm slot with the results show at 9.15pm scoring 7.2 million viewers and a 31% share at 9.15pm. However those figures fell last night to an average of 4.7 million viewers and a 22.4% share of the audience between 6.45pm and 8pm on Sunday night, according to unofficial overnight figures.

A few quick calculations reveals that Red or Black lost 1.89m viewers between Saturday and Sunday night’s episodes and the results show lost 1.76m viewers.

Some will argue that such a fall was bound to occur as the competition became stiffer on Sunday night (Saturday night isn’t known for its excellent television) and the show didn’t have X Factor to prop it up, but the figures will be concerning for ITV, especially after it ploughed nearly £15m into the investment.
