“Flying hiiiigghh now….” etc. Sylvester Stallone has just confirmed that Rocky will be made into a musical and even weirder than that, it’s due to have its premiere in Hamburg next year with boxing champions Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko producing.
It’ll most like pare down the boxing scenes as it’ll probably reduce it to the level of camp farce if they were the focus. Instead, it’ll centre on Rocky’s tentative relationship with Adrian (Talia Shire in the original), which is the real backbone of Rocky in any case. Apparently Stallone thinks it’s a “natural extension” of the movie…we’re not quite sure what that means.
“To see this story coming to life on a musical stage makes me proud. And it would make Rocky proud,” said Stallone.
Musically, the plan is the work in some of the classic tunes from the movie while adding new material as well. Personally, I’d like to see some other Stallone movies with a musical flair. You could have Rambo massacring soliders to jaunty little tunes or my favourite, Demolition Man: The Panto in which Stallone kicks Wesley Snipes’s head off while an audience laughs at his funny shoes.
Here’s Stallone talking to Stage about the production:
