Stephen Merchant Misses Out On ‘Q’ To Ben Wishaw

Stephen Merchant recently revealed that he would relish the chance to play Q in the new Bond movie.

The gangly funny man told Shortlist magazine: “…when John Cleese hangs up his boots. I could imagine doing that – a faintly comic role in a dramatic thing”. He went on to joke…”but I can’t imagine they’d cast me as a hard-bitten private eye with a drink problem and a failed marriage.”

He imagined right. Merchant’s dreams have now been dashed with the news that Ben Whishaw is to take over the role in the new film Skyfall. As the youngest ever Q, this actor on the rise has been pitched as a ‘new draw’ for female fans. I suppose if Daniel Craig is too beefy for your taste, the geek chic of 31 year old Ben might be a favourable alternative.

For those who aren’t interested in the totty however, true Bond fans will be interested to see how this youthful British actor takes on the challenge. It is a role made famous by the elder gentlemen after all and casting a Q who is younger than Bond might prove to be an interesting dynamic.

I’m optimistic. After all, who better to wax lyrical about gadgetry than the younger generation? He might just breathe new life into the role.
