With the long production times on animated features, there tends to be a lot of forward planning. So it’s surprising to learn that Steve Coogan has been added to the cast list of Despicable Me 2 with just over a year to go till it comes out.
Cast details are on lockdown at the moment. The only thing that Illumination are letting slip is that Steve Carell will be back as Supervillain Gru, whose life was turned upside down by three female children; Russell Brand will return as his assistant Dr Nefario; Kristen Wiig will reprise her role as Miss Hattie and Miranda Cosgrove is confirmed for the oldest of the three girls, Margo.
Javier Bardem was originally down to play the villain of the piece but that’s now fallen to Al Pacino. Hoo hah indeed. There’s no word on the role that Coogan will play? A villain’s assistant perhaps?
Despicable Me 2 is scheduled for a June 28th 2013 release. Meanwhile Coogan will next be seen in Ruby Sparks and What Maisie Knew and is currently filming Michael Winterbottom’s The King Of Soho, not to mention the imminent Alan Partridge movie…
