Welsh hunk Steve Jones has been ditched as the host of X Factor USA and rumours that Dermot O’Leary might be replacing him have been quashed after Simon Cowell told reporters that there was a “Brit limit on the show”.
Jones, who has received some strong criticism from TV pundits since taking the job confirmed that he was out of work on Twitter last night: “I won’t be hosting next season, but I can’t complain as I’ve had a great time,” he said. Fox have also confirmed that Cheryl Cole’s replacement Nicole Sherzinger, with whom Jones was romantically connected at one stage, would also not be returning next year.
After Cowell poached Alicia Dixon from the Beeb’s Strictly Come Dancing, the news has sparked more concerns that Cowell will be out to tap up some more talent from one of his reality rivals in a bid to boost his empire.
Yet Jones’ departure has been on the cards for some time after head of Fox Kevin Reilly was heard bigging up the talents of homegrown presenter Ryan Seacreast. Reilly talked about the show, saying changes were needed for the second series and bigged up the talents of American Idol host Ryan Seacrest.
âWhether Steveâs the guy or not, it comes under the heading of growth in general so there will be some tweaks to the show,â? he said at the Television Critics Association. âHosting, as we know, it is a much harder job than meets the eye. I think everybody now has come to realize the value of Ryan Seacrest.â?
