The Emoji Movie ‘won’ four awards in this year’s Golden Raspberry Awards.
The Razzies – the anti-Oscars which give awards to the worst films every year, gave the movie the awards for ‘Worst Picture’, ‘Worst Director’ to Tony Leondis, ‘Worst Screen Combo’ to “Any two obnoxious emojis”, and ‘Worst Screenplay’ to Leondis, Eric Siegel and Mike White. The Emoji Movie is the first feature-length animated film to ‘win’ these awards.
Although Transformers: The Last Knight was the most nominated film, being up for nine awards, it failed to ‘win’ anything. The only other film to get more than one award was Fifty Shades Darker, which received ‘Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel’ and ‘Worst Supporting Actress’ for Kim Basinger. ‘Worst Supporting Actor’ went to Mel Gibson for his role in Daddy’s Home 2.
Elsewhere Tom Cruise was named ‘Worst Actor’ for The Mummy, while the award for ‘Worst Actress’ went to male comic Tyler Perry for his drag role in Boo 2! A Madea Halloween. There was also a special award organised by the website Rotten Tomatoes for ‘The Razzie Nominee So Bad You Loved It’, which the website’s readers could vote for which film they thought was unfairly nominated in this year’s Razzies. They voted for Baywatch, beating among other films The Emoji Movie.
