“Poor unfortunate souls…” The wholesale adaptation of classic fairy tales goes unabated and the latest to fall under executives’ gaze is Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid which Sony are planning to revive.
To Sony’s credit, they’re not tampering with the Disney classic. Far from having anything to do with friendly Jamaican crabs or nefarious sorcerous octopodes, the new story helmed by Country Strong writer/director Shana Feste will take inspiration from Carolyn Turgeon’s book Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale.
It tells the story of a princess who sets out on a dangerous journey to marry the prince of her rival kingdom in order to save her own, ravaged land. But what she doesn’t know is that a beautiful mermaid has fallen for the same man and sacrificed everything to be with him.
Turgeon’s also got Godmother: The Secret Cinderella Story in her back catalogue which execs will no doubt be sniffing around soon.
