Louis Theroux is heading back to Westboro Baptist Church to pay a second visit to the Phelps family, the subject of his 2007 documentary The Most Hated Family In America.
It’s good to hear they’ve been keeping busy, picketing the funerals of US soldiers to protest America’s tolerance of homosexuality, along with developing the theory that Obama is The Beast spoken of in the Book Of Revelation. If that wasn’t crazy enough, after his first programme went out, they see Louis himself as one of the worst men in all human history, alleging he is on a par with Pontius Pilate for his “mockery” of Christianity.
The WBC have also dealt with a succession of crises in the lapsing years, including family member defections and a Supreme Court case. Louis tracks down some of the departed members, two young women that appeared in the first documentary, and probes their parents, who have “cut off” their renegade daughters.
With Louis’ usual ability to charm the pants off his subjects – remember Christine Hamilton fawning over him? – it’ll be odd to see him fall drastically out of favour with this reviled family.
Louis Theroux: America’s Most Hated Family In Crisis will be on BBC2 this summer.
