Tom Cruise is in talks to play Lee Child’s hard ass Jack Reacher in One Shot, an adaptation of the novel by Christopher McQuarrie who is also looking to direct. It’s a project that’s been batted around since 2005 but is only now coming to fruition.
On the face of it Cruise isn’t the ideal choice to play Reacher, an ex-cop turned drifter who doles out brutal violence to anyone who crosses his path. Thing is, Reacher’s 6′ 5″ and rather an imposing force. Cruise…well, let’s just say he could probably headbutt Reacher in the goolies. Lee Child was asked by Deadline what he thought of the casting decision and he said replied: “Reacher’s size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way.”. Scrappy-dappy Do!
One Shot will tell the story of Reacher as he tries to track down a lone sniper but quickly finds that there’s much more to the killings than meets the eye.
Cruise is currently engaged to shoot Joseph Kosinski’s apocalyptic Oblivion so Paramount will try to nab him either before or after he finishes that.
