Walking Dead Season 2 Premiere Smashes Viewing Record

“That Walking Dead is now the most watched drama in the history of basic cable is staggering, just like our zombies.”

All bad zombie jokes aside, AMC president Charlie Collier is correct in noting the significance of last night’s ratings. The US television sensation made a record-breaking return to basic-cable with 7.3 million tuning in for the premier and 11 million total viewers for the night.

The former record was held by the 2002 premier of USA’s The Dead Zone.

This increase of 38% in total viewers from last season’s premier is particularly impressive given the issues the production team faced in July, when creator and executive producer Frank Darabont stepped down as boss. Since executive producer Glen Mazzara has taken the reigns, things appear to be better than ever. The Walking Dead has found a television niche, somewhere between cult horror and mass appeal.

Let’s face it, who doesn’t want to see a zombie’s head get blown off?
