Ricky Gervais’s career has been rather hit and miss over the last couple of years. Derek went down well, but Life’s Too Short proved less popular and some loved his hosting of the Golden Globes, while others wanted to run him out of town, flaming torces in hand.
Yet the same can’t be said for his sidekick Karl Pilkington, who has won unrivalled acclaim for his reluctant travelogue, An Idiot Abroad. The second series even got him a BAFTA nomination.
And speaking of sidekicks, Pilkington will have one of his own for the upcoming third series. Warwick Davis, star of Harry Potter, Star Wars and of course Gervais’ recent cringey comedy, Life’s Too Short.
âI donât know how it will work out,” said Pilkington. âHonestly. Edmund Hillary had that Tenzing fella, Ben Fogle had James Cracknell. Iâve been given an Ewok.â?
But Ricky Gervais was more optimistic.. âKarl once said to me that opposites attract,” he said. “Warwick Davis is sociable, hard-working and never complains. They should get along fine.â?
The new series ‘An Idiot Abroad: The Short Way Round’ (geddit?) will follow Karl and Warwick on a 5,000-mile journey from Venice to Eastern Europe, India and China, where they’ll have loads of experiences.
