There was barely a dry eye in the house when X Factor contestant Chris Maloney took to the stage on Saturday night, especially when he told the tearful judges that he suffered from a lack of confidence.
However, it has today been revealed that the singer was far from inexperienced on the big stage, having previously been employed as a warbler on a cruise ship.
Former boss Mollie Daley, who was also a judge on Sky Oneâs Showboaters, hired Chris to sing on First Choiceâs Bolero cruise ship.
Talking to the Sun, she said: âI was astonished when I listened to all these claims by Chris to Gary Barlow that no one had given him a chance.
âThat was so disingenuous of him. He came to us in 2000 after spotting our advert in The Stage.
âHe had a big voice which was a bit rough around the edges, but we knew we had to have him.
âAnd we gave him months of vocal coaching. Itâs strange that he says he was so nervous, because he didnât show a hint of nerves when he was on stage with us.
âIn fact he became so popular he ended up recording an album that we sold on board.â?
Chris has since defended his comments on stage, saying the experience of singing to a few hundred people on a cruise ship (pictured below) was nothing like being on X Factor.
Since the revelation, Take That judge Gary Barlow has banned the use of mobile phones amongst contests, saying that outside news distracts them.
