AMC are gaining themselves a nice little rep for decent drama these days and after achieving success with relatively recent American history in Mad Men, they’re now headed to the post-Civil War era for their latest project. Hell On Wheels features Anson Mount as a former confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon who is seeking revenge on the Union troops who killed his family. His quest leads him to the Union Pacific Railroad’s westward construction of the first Transcontinental Railroad. In the turbulent times following the American Civil War, the nation is trying to heal its divides and this Western promises to deal with the institutionalised greed and corruption, the immigrant experience, and the plight of the newly emancipated African-Americans during reconstruction.
