It wasn’t difficult to spot which of the 22 players on the pitch at the start of last night’s Soccer Aid match might be a rock n’ roll musician. But while Sergio Pizzorno stood out because of his long hair and healthy beard, the Kasabian guitarist also caught the eye with his fabulous finishing.
With the game at nil nil, ex-Arsenal player Freddie Ljungberg played the musician in down the left and he lobbed former England no.1 with a fabulous right-footed finish. It’s a pity he’s not English because with Rooney banned for the first two matches of Euro 2012, Roy Hodgson could do a lot worse. Just look at Stewart Downing!
England eventually won the game 3-1 with goals from Jonathan Wilkes (Robbie Williams’ best mate) and Kevin Phillips (once of Sunderland) but the game will also be remembered by fans for Teddy Sheringham’s clumsy challenge on Gordon Ramsay, which led to the TV chef being carried off the pitch on a stretcher, causing some wags to alter his Wikipedia page to say that the ex-England striker had ‘killed’ him..
There were a host of American actors playing in the charity match, yet Will Ferrell (Anchorman) and Mike Myers (Austin Powers) weren’t able to break the deadlock for the rest of the world team and Woody Harrelson wasn’t able to replicate his form of a couple of years ago when he scored the winning penalty.
The event – which has been organised by Robbie Williams for a couple of years – raised nearly £4 million for UNICEF, which helps children in West and East Africa..
