In the 2016 European Championships, one of the grimmer sites was that of Russian football hooligans on the rampage. They injured over 100 England fans, with two put in comas. To make things worse, Russia next year is hosting the World Cup. Filmed as part of This World, filmmaker Alex Stockley von Statzer goes to Russia in order to see for himself the extent of the problem and what the authorities are trying to do about it. He also meets some of the “firms”, which unlike the English hooligans of the 1970s and 80s, are teetotal, physically fit, trained in martial arts and highly organised. Among the footage we see one hooligan taking pride in describing an attack on England fans that he was a part of, and films fights between new members who are auditioning to be part of local firm. Russia’s Hooligan Army is on BBC Two at 21.00.
