One of the biggest disasters of Tudor times was when Henry VIII’s warship the Mary Rose sank off Portsmouth in 1545. When the ship was raised up, human remains were discovered and archaeologists are now using the latest scientific methods to come up with a better idea of what some of the people on board looked like. These tests show that we may have to rethink of our typical image of the scene. For example, some evidence suggests that some of the crew on board may have been black. Skeletons of the Mary Rose is on Channel 4 at 20.00.
