Pick of the day: 1899

All aboard for a cruise with a difference. An eclectic mix of wealthy and lowly with a sordid assortment of backstories book passage on the liner Prometheus lured by the promise of a new life in America.

This eight-parter by Dark duo Jantje Friese and Baran Bo Odar begins with an intercepted message from a liner presumed long lost to the deep and you’ll need your wits about you to keep track of the story.

The passengers of the Prometheus, all of different backgrounds and nationalities, are united by their hopes and dreams for a new century and their future abroad. When they discover a second ship adrift on the open sea that had gone missing for months, their journey takes an unexpected turn. What they find on board will turn their passage to the promised land into a nightmare-like riddle, connecting each of the passenger’s pasts through a web of secrets.

If you have seen Dark and enjoyed its complexities, you’ll enjoy 1899 for the mind-bending, reality-shifting storylines that move from episode to episode. Probably not the best series to binge watch as you’ll need time to cogitate to have any chance of picking a path through to the end.

Available to stream on Netflix.
