Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard star in director Robert Zemeckis’s World War II action-adventure/romance. Max Vatan (Pitt) and Marianne Beauséjour (Cotillard) meet in Casablanca in 1942. He’s a Canadian intelligence officer who’s on a mission to assassinate the German ambassador; she’s with the French Resistance and is there to pose as his wife, having spent time ‘fraternising’ with local Nazis to ease his access to the target. The charade works, as does the assassination. They fall in love during the assignment, and she relocates to London with him. A year later, they’re married in real life and have a baby. But then the Special Operations Executive summons him with ominous news: they suspect that she is, in fact, a German double agent; and that if she falls into the trap they plan to set her, he will have to execute her. Despite being told to act normally and keep out of the operation, he sets out to exonerate her…
