Hans Christian Andersen is a 1952 musical starring Danny Kaye as the famous Danish writer, whose works include The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Ugly Ducking and The Little Mermaid.

Perhaps this is the most well known of all Kaye’s films, in which he gives a brilliant performance, as do all of the supporting cast. There are also ballet sequences included in the film, including one for The Little Mermaid.

Producer Samuel Goldwyn had been trying to get the film made since 1936, and the final production is an engaging musical which can be enjoyed by all ages.

Hans Christian Andersen is on BBC2 at 7.10.
