Film of the day: Bombshell

Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie in Bombshell.

Bombshell is an Oscar-nominated drama starring Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie, based on the true story of three Fox News employees who fought to expose the inappropriate behaviour of disgraced media mogul Roger Ailes (John Lithgow).

Set in the lead up to the 2016 US presidential election, the story follows real-life journalists Megyn Kelly (Theron) and Gretchen Carlson (Kidman), as well as the fictional Kayla Posipsil (Robbie).

A top media personality and recent Republican debate moderator, Megyn is dealing with the fierce backlash from her questioning of Donald Trump regarding his offensive comments toward women. Meanwhile, recently demoted news anchor Gretchen learns that she is contractually unable to sue the network, but can sue Ailes personally. And on only her second day of work, Kayla is sexually assaulted by the septuagenarian television executive. When Gretchen is fired – and decides to sue Ailes – a domino effect of accusations is set in motion. But toppling such an untouchable figure is a tall order and toxic misogyny appears to run deeply through the network. So, can justice ever really be served?

Directed by Jay Roach, with Connie Britton, Allison Janney and Rob Delaney.
