Ryan Reynolds stars in director Tim Miller’s Marvel action-comedy (the eighth edition in the X-Men franchise), which shares its ultraviolence, knowing style and self-deprecatory, foul-mouthed wit with the likes of Kick-Ass. Wisecracking tough guy Wade Wilson (Reynolds) was once a US Special Forces soldier, but he was dishonourably discharged from the service and he now wreaks vengeance for cash. Wade finds his work at Sister Margaret’s School for Wayward Girls, which is actually a clubhouse-cum-employment-exchange for mercenaries. It’s also where he meets the ballsy prostitute Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), who rapidly becomes the love of his life. However, when Wade is diagnosed with cancer, it seems his life will be a short one – until he’s approached with the offer of an experimental cure. It works. But it also transforms him into a self-healing, virtually indestructible anti-hero, tears him away from Vanessa, and sets him on a long and bloody quest for vengeance against the mutants Ajax (Ed Skrein) and Angel Dust (Gina Carano), who forced his superhuman powers upon him.
