Deepwater Horizon

Deepwater Horizon

Fact-based, Oscar-nominated drama starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Peter Berg. On 20 April 2010, in the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of Louisiana, an explosion on the BP-owned oil rig Deepwater Horizon claimed the lives of 11 crew members and caused the biggest oil spill in US waters. Via the experiences of Mike Williams (Wahlberg), the rig’s chief electronics technician, the film tracks the industrial and environmental disaster from its origins in a disregard for safety procedures caused by a rush to get the rig pumping oil, through to the catastrophe’s immediate aftermath, and includes the crew’s desperate fight to stay alive when their platform far out to sea catches fire. The cast also includes Kate Hudson as Williams’ wife; Kurt Russell as the rig’s offshore manager; Dylan O’Brien as a member of the drilling team; John Malkovich as one of the BP managers; and Gina Rodriguez as the crew member who attempts to send out the SOS message.
