Devon and Cornwall

As millions of holidaymakers head to England’s southwest in search of sandy beaches, surf and sunshine this summer, Devon and Cornwall spends time with the people who call these amazing counties home. From farmers and fishermen to artisans and adventurers, this series takes us from heather-clad moors to golden sandy beaches to celebrate more of the people who live and work in these proud counties. In this episode, we follow friends Gary Aldington and Nick Spencer as they attempt to turn a passion for retro powerboats into racing glory and prizes. The pair are putting Gary’s 80s powerboat Kohaku through its paces in Falmouth harbour ahead of their first ever competition in Torquay. But will the novice drivers and their 40-year-old boat have what it takes to challenge the powerboat pack? On the Isles of Scilly, the pace of life is a little less frenetic. On St Mary’s, hotelier Robert Francis runs the Star Castle Hotel, located in a 16th-century fortress. As well as running the hotel, Robert’s a fisherman and vineyard owner, and we join him as he harvests his latest crop from the vines before heading out to sea to haul in his lobster pots. In Devon’s Teign Valley, woodsman John Williamson and his daughter Betsy are attempting to revive a lost tradition – making Devon stave baskets, from ash collected from their very own 10-acre wood. Few craftspeople now make the baskets – which once would have been commonplace and used to collect produce such as cider apples – but 10-year-old Betsy is keen to learn the skills to ensure the tradition lives on
