Coverage of the EFL semi-final, second-leg between Liverpool and Southampton from Anfield. The term ‘busted flush’ has been used quite a lot in recent weeks when referring to the results and performance of Jurgen Klopp’s previously high-flying Liverpool.
Having started the season like an express train with an irrepressible brand of attacking football and the now familiar Klopp ‘gegenpress’, the wheels of the engine are beginning to seize. One win in six games in January has dealt a serious blow to the Merseysiders’ Premier League ambitions and, having enjoyed the lion’s share of possession at St Mary’s in the first-leg, they failed to register on the scoresheet. Southampton were the more dangerous side and good value for their 1-nil win. Indeed, by Klopp’s admission, the Reds were lucky to escape with only a single goal deficit.
The Saints have not featured in a domestic cup final since 2003 and tonight could be a famous night for the club from the south coast. If they can frustrate Liverpool’s attack by sitting deep and playing on the break, as Swansea did so effectively at the weekend, it could be a delirious drive home for happy Southampton fans.
