FIFA World Cup 2022 - England v Iran

Group B Kick off 1.00pm

Gary Lineker introduces live coverage of England’s opening World Cup game against Group B rivals Iran at Doha’s Khalifa International Stadium.

The Three Lions were semi-finalists when the tournament was last held four years ago, but they arrive in Qatar on the back of a six-match winless run in the Nations League. However, Gareth Southgate’s side will be optimistic about progressing to the knockout stage, while striker Harry Kane is looking to make history – he is chasing an 11th goal at major international tournaments, which would be a new England record.

Iran has won just two matches at their five previous World Cup appearances but laid down a warning by defeating Uruguay 1-0 in September. Former Real Madrid boss Carlos Queiroz has returned for a second stint in charge and will make sure ‘Team Melli’ is tough to break down.

Commentary comes from Guy Mowbray and Jermaine Jenas.
