Film of the Day: BlacKkKlansman (2018)

Spike Lee’s stunning and bewildering film about the real life story of Ron Stallworth, a Colorado police officer who infiltrated the ranks of the Ku Klux Klan… who also happened to be black.

We see Stallworth gain trust and confidence with the racist organisation through sneaky phone calls, and Adam Driver fills the shoes as his white double. But does the position of Stallworth as a police officer jeopardise his anti-fascist quest, given the police’s history of anti-black brutality?

Told in a very dry comic style and starring John David Washington and Adam Driver, BlacKkKlansman remains serious while also poking fun at the absurdity of the situation. The absurdity and lethality of racism in the USA is bought to the front by Lee’s classic style.
